Is Canyon Lake Worth Visiting?
We absolutely recommend taking a Canyon Lake day trip and experiencing some of the unique nature in the Texas Hill Country. Canyon Lake is more than just a stop between San Antonio and Austin, the area has lots to offer! Personally, we think there are too many Canyon Park activities to fit into a single day!

What is Canyon Lake known for?
Canyon Lake is known for water recreation. There is outdoor recreation, including hiking trails and parks. It has eight park areas for people to camp, swim, boat, and picnic. A par 72 golf course, with well kept fairways and hills, is located in Canyon Lake.
Is Canyon Lake open for visitors?
The Canyon Lake Marina and Campground offers marina services, has a restaurant, and a relaxing beach area. Open year-round, it’s only two miles from the Tortilla Flat Campground.

It is not impossible for alligators to live in Canyon Lake. Before Canyon Dam was built, the Guadalupe River ran murky and warmer than it does today. Stories exist of alligators living in the warmer waters of the river, but no one has seen them in years now that the river runs colder and clearer.

Recreational activities remain safe in the main body of the lake, however caution is recommended in the cove areas and swimming is not recommended in these areas. With Canyon Lake’s history of algae blooms, this concern is not uncommon, but it is advised that extreme caution be taken in the cove areas specifically.

Swimming. There are three parks around Canyon Lake that have official designated swim beaches. Potters Creek Park has a beach for registered CAMPING guests only. Comal and Canyon Parks have beaches for the general public.
Which is better Canyon Lake or Saguaro Lake?
Canyon Lake is farther but it is much more scenic than Saguaro Lake. I agree that Canyon Lake is more scenic than Saguaro, though there are still some great views off Saguaro Lake. Saguaro Lake is perhaps 45 minutes or so from your hotel. Canyon Lake almost a 90 minute drive from the Fairmont.
Do you have to pay to get into Canyon Lake?
A. Yes. The Canyon Lake Golf Course is private but the driving range and clubhouse are open to the public. For the first time, there are a limited number of annual memberships sold to non-members.
